Lobular Carcinoma In Situ
Lobular: Lobules are the milk producing structures.
In Situ: In the lobule, refers to tumors that have not grown beyond their site of origin.
Lobular carcinoma in situ is classified as a high risk lesion for further development of breast cancer or pre-cancer.
The management and recommended treatment of lobular carcinoma in situ detected in a needle core biopsy is to have an excisional biopsy by a surgeon. This is to examine more tissue under a microscope to make sure that it is not a more worrisome cancer finding. Current studies show a small percentage of these prove to be cancer.
Having lobular carcinoma in situ (LCIS) adds to your personal risk factors for developing breast cancer. Discuss your specific risk factors for breast cancer with your health care provider or genetic counselor.
